Outline Effects in Your Coloring Pages
Today I wanted to share some fun ways and examples of ideas you can use for adding outline effects to your coloring pages. Here’s some of my favorite outlining techniques I use to make my coloring book art look more dynamic, vibrant, and colorful. Outlining adds depth.
Fine-Tip Outlines
One of the simplest ways to add an outline effect to your coloring pages is by using a fine-tip black marker or pen. This technique works well for adding definition to the edges of your coloring. Start by coloring your page as you normally would, and once you’re finished, carefully trace the outlines of the objects or shapes with the black marker. This will create a bold and eye-catching effect, making your coloring pages stand out.
Sketchy Outline
This can be done with any kind of ultra fine tip marker or even ball point pens or gel pens – simply loosely doodle the outline along the original lines of the coloring book page. You can use this technique to give your artwork a more hand drawn doodled sketchbook style.
Colored Pencil Outlines
Another fun technique is to use colored pencils to create an outline effect. Instead of using a black marker, choose a color that complements the colors you’ve used in your coloring page. For example, if you’ve colored a flower with shades of pink, you can use a light purple or lavender colored pencil to outline the petals.
You can experiment here with what side of the line you decide to outline – whether it’s the inside edge or the outer edge. There’s so many possibilities, and of course you can always choose to use contrasting and complementary color schemes here as well.
Get Wet
If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can experiment with different types of media to create an outline effect. For instance, you can try using watercolor pencils or markers to create a watercolor-like outline. Simply wet a fine brush and carefully blend the colors along the edges of your coloring page. This technique adds a soft and dreamy effect, giving your coloring pages a unique and artistic touch.
Sparkle + Shine
For a more glam look, you can try using glitter or metallic pens to outline your coloring pages. This technique works particularly well for fantasy-themed coloring pages or illustrations with magical elements. The glitter or metallic effect adds a touch of sparkle and enchantment, making your coloring pages come to life.
Remember, outlining is not just limited to the edges of your coloring pages. You can also use it to add details and texture to your coloring. For example, you can outline the veins of leaves or the fur of animals to create a more realistic and dimensional look.
Adding an outline effect to your coloring pages is a creative way to make them more visually appealing and engaging. So, grab your favorite coloring tools and start experimenting with these techniques to take your coloring book art to the next level. Have fun and enjoy the process of bringing your coloring pages to life!
